First, check your arrival point

Check the terminal route and meeting instructions for your particular booking. Keep the arrival instructions handy, and leave enough time for unloading, walking or waiting for a shuttle before check-in.

One terminal, and a car park system built on colours

Stansted is simpler than Heathrow — one terminal, so no chance of going to the wrong building. The complication is the Short Stay car park, which is divided into coloured zones, and the zone decides your walk.

Orange, Red and Yellow have the shortest routes to the terminal. Green is covered, which matters more than people expect in January. Blue is the longest walk. When you book Short Stay you are booking a zone, so check which one you're getting rather than assuming they're equivalent.

The options

Short Stay — the coloured zones above. You keep your keys, you walk, and the walk runs from about one minute to twelve depending on zone. Some zones let you turn up without booking, but the drive-up rate is noticeably higher than the pre-booked one.

Mid Stay — a free 24-hour shuttle, roughly seven minutes. This is the best-value middle ground for a trip of several days, and it's also the free drop-off and pick-up option, which is covered below.

Long Stay and JetParks — official self-park products for longer trips, with a free bus roughly every fifteen minutes taking about fifteen minutes. Long Stay is pre-book only and has a five-day minimum, so it's not an option for a short break.

Dropping off and picking up — read this part properly

Stansted enforces this harder than most UK airports, and the rules catch people out.

Express Set Down is the fast option right by the terminal. It's barrierless, so nobody takes your money at a gate — cameras read your plate and you pay online, and the deadline is the end of the following day. Miss it and it becomes a fine. There's a maximum stay, and there's also a charge for coming back within half an hour of leaving, which catches people doing a second run.

You cannot pick up in Express Set Down. It is drop-off only. Collections have to happen in Short Stay or Mid Stay.

The free route is Mid Stay, which gives you up to an hour at no charge with a shuttle to the terminal. If you're collecting someone from a flight that might be delayed, this is where to wait.

Don't stop on the approach roads. Cameras cover them and the fines are substantially more than any car park charge.

Blue Badge holders can get extra time in Express Set Down, but you have to notify a traffic marshal and display the badge. It isn't automatic.

If you live nearby, Stansted runs a local resident discount for drop-offs within a few miles of the airport. Worth checking before you pay the standard rate.

A night near the airport

For an early departure, compare the cost of a nearby room with your preferred arrival plan. Check how you will get from the hotel to the terminal at the time you need to travel.

• Confirm room occupancy, check-in hours and any early breakfast options.
• Ask whether the shuttle is included, pre-booked or paid separately.
• A “hotel with parking” offer may cover only your overnight stay. A holiday parking package needs to cover your full trip.

Make time for the lounge

Check that the lounge is in the departure area you can access. Entry rules, opening hours, maximum stay and child policies vary. Allow time for security and the walk to your gate before choosing an entry time.

Arrange the ride, both ways

Use the exact pickup and destination addresses when requesting a quote. Include everyone travelling, the size of your bags and any child-seat or accessibility requirements.

• Check the meeting point, contact number and waiting-time allowance.
• Ask how flight delays, parking charges and additional stops are handled.
• For your return journey, allow time to clear arrivals and collect bags.

Collect a car with the details checked

Airport car hire can be convenient, but the collection desk may be in the terminal, reached by shuttle or at an off-airport location. Check where to collect and return the vehicle before paying.

• Confirm driver age, licence and payment-card requirements.
• Compare the deposit, fuel, mileage and insurance terms—not only the headline price.
• Check opening hours and what happens if your flight arrives late.
